STONECREST, GA—Hundreds of members from the community are expected to gather for an annual balloon release ceremony hosted by New Birth Missionary Baptist Church on Sunday, May 28, at 11:30 a.m., 6400 Woodrow Road.
Those who have lost loved ones are invited to this event on New Birth’s campus. The event is designed to recognize and honor individuals lost to violence, health-related issues and other causes of death.
“We recognize that members of our community are profoundly impacted by the loss of loved ones and that difficult loss often has a lingering and lasting impact as they transition through the grief process that can take years for some to truly find closure and peace,” said New Birth Senior Pastor Jamal Harrison Bryant. “There is no singular way to experience bereavement. Our pastoral team will be on site to support individuals and families who want to pay special tribute on Sunday.”
New Birth first launched the balloon release effort during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic that provided members and loved ones of those lost with a moment to gather, reflect and share memories with others experiencing similar grief. The balloon release takes place on the main lawn across from the bookstore side entrance of the church, near the Rock Garden.
Ceremonial balloons will be provided to attendees onsite with associated colors: black balloons will represent those who died from any form of violence; lavender balloons will signify individuals who died for any form of cancer; red balloons will denote any form of heart disease; yellow balloons will signify COVID-19; and silver balloons indicate any other cause of death.
Invited speakers include Stonecrest Mayor, members of Stonecrest City Council, DeKalb County Sheriff, DeKalb County Police Chief, community activists, civic groups, business owners, and neighbors. The annual balloon release is open to the public. Participants can register to attend by going to the New Birth website at www.newbirth.org and click the events tab to register.
