CONYERS, GA—The NewRock chapter of Top Ladies of Distinction will host a pre-screening of the 2023 adaptation of The Color Purple on Sunday, Dec. 10, 4 p.m., at AMC Conyers Crossing 16, 1536 Dogwood Drive in Conyers.
The fundraising event offers attendees the opportunity to see the movie 15 days before it is set to open in theatres on Christmas Day. Proceeds from the event supports NewRock’s scholarships and community programs.
“NewRock Chapter is excited for the opportunity to engage with community members as we support Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc.’s literacy initiatives. Premiering the movie before its national release will ensure that citizens in Newton, Rockdale, DeKalb, and Henry Counties can enjoy this art form while simultaneously becoming a partner in NewRock’s efforts to uphold the TLOD motto – Serving Youth and Adults,” said Chapter President Charnita West.
The Color Purple chronicles the extraordinary sisterhood of three women who share one unbreakable bond. This bold new take on the beloved classic based on the novel by Alice Walker is directed by Blitz Bazawule and produced by Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders and Quincy Jones. The adaptation boasts a star-studded cast including Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, H.E.R., Halle Bailey, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, and Fantasia Barrino.
“Our chapter decided to host a premiere showing of The Color Purple due to our desire for this adaptation of Alice Walker’s 1982 novel to be supported, despite the Pulitzer winner being banned from being read in Georgia schools,” West said. “The Color Purple highlights the beauty of relationships between and among African-American wome, while addressing societal pressures and norms that they had to overcome. Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc. encourages women’s uplift and empowerment, and NewRock is eager to support this powerful, mostly female cast through our Status of Women initiative.”
The screening is a 2023 signature fundraiser for NewRock, the proceeds from which will provide scholarships to teens and funding for community programs. Since its inception in 2018, NewRock has awarded $15,000 in scholarships and supported community initiatives and organizations, including Newton County Domestic Violence Taskforce’s Walk a Mile in Her Shoes; Rockdale County Public Schools Back-to-School Bash; Lithonia Middle School; and Girls First Community Garden.
The event is open to the public and space is limited. Screening tickets are $25 and can be purchased online at tlodnewrock.ticketleap.com/the-color-purple2/. For more information about the NewRock chapter and the screening, visit www.newrocktlod.org.
