Property owners asked to voluntarily check their pipe material
DECATUR, Ga.— A federally-mandated inventory of publicly-owned drinking water pipes has determined that there are no known lead pipes in DeKalb County Department of Watershed Management’s (DWM) inventory.
The inventory, conducted in accordance to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR) and the State of Georgia Environmental Protection Division’s (EPD) guidelines, was completed by an October 2024 federally-mandated deadline and can be found by clicking “Check your line” at www.dekalbcountyga.gov/watershed-management/lcrr.
Because DWM is focused on protecting the health of every household in DeKalb County, property owners have been mailed a letter that notifies them that:
- The material type for the drinking water pipes of their private lines is unknown.
- Because the material type is unknown, there is a possibility that the material type is lead.
- Lead in drinking water irreparably harms the health of children and adults and disproportionately impacts lower-income communities and communities of color.
To have a complete inventory that includes private pipes, residents are asked to complete a survey to inform the county of the material type for the drinking water pipes entering their homes.
Compliance with this survey is completely voluntary. The survey can be completed here: https://survey123.arcgis.com/share/bcea30cf2b1d4d3493dfe652d5235a31.
