Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office announces changes in mail procedures for jail inmates

ROCKDALE COUNTY, GA—Rockdale County Sheriff Eric Levett has announced new inmate mail procedures are being implemented at the Rockdale County Jail to prevent contraband from entering the facility. 

The crackdown follows a recent incident involving a Rockdale jail detention deputy and a former employee who were arrested in connection with contraband smuggled into the jail.  The Sheriff’s Office announced the arrests in December but did not disclose the identities of the suspects or the specific items that were smuggled, stating that the investigation was ongoing.  Sheriff Levett praised his team’s investigative work and promised that action would be taken against those involved. 

“I want to be clear that all leads will be thoroughly investigated and anyone who is implicated in bringing prohibited items into the Rockdale County Jail will be held accountable and charged according to the state laws of Georgia,” Sheriff Levett had stated at the time.  

Effective Feb. 10, personal mail to inmates must be sent to an Atlanta facility where it will be scanned into the inmate’s JailATM communication account for them to access. Personal mail should be addressed as indicated below:

Bulk mail (copies of internet sites, numerous large, scanned copies, etc.) will not be accepted, the Sheriff’s Office said. 

Legal mail will continue to be accepted at the Rockdale Jail, if sent by an attorney of record. Legal mail must be clearly marked “Private Legal Mail” with the inmate’s name and cell location. 

Business or administrative forms requiring a signature should be brought to the Rockdale facility directly.

Any personal correspondence that is mixed in with legal or business mail will be destroyed, the Sheriff’s Office said.
