Stonecrest, GA—Jesse Collings, a Stonecrest resident and Georgia State University student, has been named the recipient of the 2023 Mattie’s Way Memorial Scholarship. Collings was awarded the $1,000 scholarship on June 1, according to bold.org.
The scholarship is funded by the Wilmoth family, in memory of Matthew “Mattie” Wilmoth, a beloved son who struggled for years with anxiety and depression. The scholarship aims to raise awareness of mental health issues so that those struggling are able to access the help they need and support undergraduate pursuing degrees in psychology or counseling.
Despite seeming to be doing well after seeking help, Matt Wilmonth kept many of his feelings to himself and took his life at the age of 17 on June 16, 2022, bold.org’s web site states.
Collings wrote this year’s winning essay about why he is passionate about psychology.
Any high school senior or undergraduate student in West Virginia, Georgia, or Alabama, who is majoring in psychology and/or counseling, a field Matt Wilmoth was interested in, may apply for this scholarship at the next application period. Other scholarships also are available at bold.org.
