Transportation improvement projects get underway in Conyers

Crosswalks, traffic signals and tennis courts in the city limits will all receive facelifts as part of spring cleaning efforts by the city’s  through SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) funds, Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) grants and federal funding.

Crosswalks at 15 intersections in the city limits will be restriped by Peek Pavement Marking beginning the week of Feb. 26. Weather permitting, the restriping of the crosswalks will be completed in March. The cost of the crosswalk improvement project is $91,634 and is funded by SPLOST dollars and a GDOT Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant for Off-System Safety awarded to the city.

Traffic signal upgrades at 10 intersections in the city limits of Conyers are underway and expected to be completed by the fall of 2018. The city is contracting with Brooks, Berry, Haynie and Associates on the federally-funded construction project. The upgrades consist of LED vehicular signals, countdown pedestrian signals, ADA wheelchair ramps and crosswalk striping.

The tennis court and parking lot at Bonner Park on Rowland Road will soon be resurfaced. Completely funded by local SPLOST dollars, the $118,000 project will be reconstructed by Southeastern Tennis Courts, Inc. The project is slated to begin in early May. Once completed, the project will consist of a newly resurfaced tennis court, new nets and posts, and black-coated, vinyl fencing and gates surrounding the court. The parking lot adjacent to the courts, playground and nearby PATH trail will be resurfaced and restriped.

“These are several small projects that will ultimately have a big impact on our citizens whether by vehicle, on foot, and in the case of the tennis courts, on their health in terms of the city’s recreational offerings,” said Brian Frix, deputy director of Public Works and Transportation. “We encourage citizens to exercise patience as these projects may result in periodic traffic delays and also in the timeliness of completing the projects as they are all weather permitting.”
