STONE MOUNTAIN, GA—The DeKalb County School District has achieved the highest honors in the state. According to the latest U.S. News & World Report’s annual rankings, Kittredge Magnet School and Wadsworth Magnet School for High Achievers have been named the No. 1 and No. 2 elementary schools in Georgia, respectively.
“This extraordinary recognition reflects the hard work and dedication of so many of our remarkable students, outstanding teachers, administrators, Board members, and the incredible support staff and community and business partners,” Superintendent Devon Q. Horton said. “It is the collective efforts and results of so many that we are able to provide world-class opportunities to every student and proud graduate of DeKalb County Schools.”
The district’s excellence extends beyond these two schools, showcasing a consistent dedication to academic achievement across all levels, Dekalb officials said.

According to U.S. News & World Report, great schools educate students from all socioeconomic backgrounds to set them up for success. Students develop core competencies in state curricula that best prepare them for high school and beyond.
“The 2024 Best Elementary and Middle Schools rankings offer a way for parents to get a snapshot of their child’s school and how well it’s doing within its community,” said LaMont Jones, managing editor for education at U.S. News. “Easily accessible data on student-teacher ratio, district spending, and the number of school counselors available at the school can keep parents informed and involved.”
The U.S. News & World Report K-8 rankings are based entirely on publicly available data from the U.S. Department of Education and focus on state assessments of students proficient in mathematics and reading/language arts, accounting for student backgrounds and overall effectiveness in education. Student-teacher ratios are used to break ties in the overall score.
Although U.S. News & World Report does not produce national rankings for elementary and middle schools, its K-12 directory lists over 119,000 schools nationwide. Among the 79,374 public schools with elementary and/or middle school grades, 65,759 (83%) were ranked in either category.
