LAWRENCEVILLE, GA – Two brothers were convicted murdering a Gainesville man after a verbal altercation inside a nightclub and have been sentenced to life in prison plus five years.
Deavian Jasiri-Teeir Netters, 25, was convicted last Friday(Oct. 24) of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony for the April 2021 shooting death of 37-year-old Shaquon Anthony McKensey.
Julian Patrick Netters, Jr., 24, Deavian’s brother, was found guilty on felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony in connection with the shooting.
“We hope that this outcome brings solace and healing to the family and loved ones of Shaquon McKensey,” District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson said. “This was a violent incident that has no place in our community, and we are grateful to the jury for this verdict.”
In the early morning of April 24, 2021, the Netters brothers went to a Lawrenceville hookah lounge. At some point, they encountered and had an altercation with McKensey, who was visiting from Gainesville and was at the lounge celebrating a birthday with friends. Around 1:30 a.m., Deavian Netters is seen leaving the lounge to wait in the parking lot near his car. Forty minutes later, Julian Netters left the lounge and went back to their Mercedes-Benz, where Deavian was waiting for him.
At trial, jurors saw surveillance footage of Julian Netters, Deavian Netters, and one unidentified individual following McKensey’s group after they left the lounge. At that point, the video showed Deavian Netters shooting the victim with an assault rifle, after which both Netters brothers and the unidentified individual fled the scene.
The weapon was later found at the Netters’ home. During trial, Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives personnel testified that DNA evidence collected from the trigger of the assault rifle was matched to Deavian Netters.
Managing Assistant District Attorneys Christopher Huslak and Angela Mattozzi prosecuted the case with assistance from DA Investigator Dennis Hennelly and Victim Witness Advocate Chelsey Thomas. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms was invaluable in closing the case, the DA stated.
