ATLANTA — MARTA is launching an ongoing initiative to overhaul its elevators and escalators beginning with West Lake Station elevators on June 19. Elevator upgrades will continue at Hamilton E. Holmes Station on June 21 and West End on June 26. Also, on June 26, two escalators at Peachtree Center will be closed for upgrades. During renovations, elevators will be out for up to eight weeks and escalators up to 16 weeks.
Customers can use the escalators or stairs instead of the elevators. Customers requiring the use of an elevator, such as those using wheelchairs, scooters, walkers, strollers, or traveling with luggage and heavy packages, should follow the below detour instructions. These detours follow the same protocol used during any MARTA elevator outages, so they are familiar to many customers.
West Lake – June 19: Elevator serving the westbound platform (Customers using the eastbound platform are not impacted at this time.)
- Arriving by westbound train:
o Remain on the train past West Lake to the next westbound station (H.E. Holmes), then transfer to an eastbound train back to West Lake.
- Arriving by bus/Mobility/car/on foot and transferring to westbound train:
o Take an eastbound train one stop to Ashby, then switch to a westbound train to continue your journey.
H.E. Holmes (End of the line) – June 21: Elevator serving the westbound platform (Customers using the eastbound platform are not impacted at this time.)
- Arriving by train traveling westbound:
o Use elevator on eastbound platform
- All other modes of arrival: N/A (end of the line station)
- [NOTE: All trains will use the eastbound platform during H.E. Holmes’ elevator renovation. The H.E. Holmes westbound platform will not be in service.]
West End –June 26: Elevator serving the northbound platform (Customers using the southbound platform are not impacted at this time.)
- Arriving by train and traveling northbound:
o Remain on the train past West End to Garnett, transfer to a southbound train back to West End.
- Arriving by bus/Mobility/car/on foot and transferring to a northbound train:
o Take a southbound train one stop to Oakland City, then switch to a northbound train to continue your journey.
Peachtree Center –June 26: Two escalators serving the northbound concourse near the Baker Street entrance will be closed.
o Customers may use a nearby reversible escalator, stairwell or elevator as alternatives.
When complete, elevators will be more aesthetically pleasing, with graffiti-resistant wall panels, a more durable design and brighter LED lighting. All elevators will also be equipped with urine-detection equipment, which has already been installed in 13 elevators throughout the system. Escalators will have new tread and handrails installed. Inside, all electrical mechanical systems including controllers, brakes, rollers, sprockets, chains, bearings and bushings will also be replaced, resulting in a quieter, smoother ride and better reliability.
