CONYERS, GA—The City of Conyers Police Department is set to enhance its emergency response capabilities with $1.3 million in federal funding allocated by U.S. Congressman David Scott to purchase a Mobile Command Vehicle for the City of Conyers.
The funding is part of the Fiscal Year 2026 Federal Appropriations Bill, which awaits final passage by Congress. Lawmakers aim to approve the bill by Sept. 30, though enactment could occur later in the fiscal year.
The state-of-the-art Mobile Command Vehicle will serve as an operational hub for strategic coordination between police, fire and other emergency workers during major incidents—enabling faster, more effective response to large-scale events such as the 2024 Bio Lab fire, officials said in a press release.
“I am proud to announce that the House Appropriations Committee has provided over $1,000,000 in federal funding for the City of Conyers Police Department to strengthen public safety and emergency preparedness,” said Congressman David Scott, whose district includes Rockdale County.
“This investment in a mobile command vehicle and advanced communication tools will ensure our first responders are equipped to act swiftly and effectively in high-risk
situations, protecting both our offices and the communities they serve. I look forward to working with my colleagues on the Appropriations Committee to ensure that this funding is signed into law.”
The Mobile Command Vehicle will not only serve the City of Conyers and Rockdale County but also function as a fully equipped operations center for quick deployment to multiple jurisdictions within the region, city officials said.
“We are grateful to our congressional partners for securing these vital public safety funds. This investment will directly support our officers, enhance emergency response capabilities, and help ensure a safer, more resilient community for all of our residents. It’s a meaningful step forward in protecting what matters most—our people,” said City Manager Kameron Kelley.
In the past, the Conyers Police Department has utilized mobile command vehicles provided by the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security to manage large-scale events.
“Securing this Mobile Command Vehicle is a monumental step forward for the Conyers Police Department and the safety and emergency preparedness for our community,” said Chief Scott Freeman.
“The vehicle will not only enhance our ability to manage large-scale events, but it will also serve as a mobile headquarters for tactical operations, disaster response, and ongoing public safety efforts across Conyers and Rockdale County. This will ultimately allow us to serve and protect our residents while ensuring we are prepared and have the necessary resources to manage large-scale incidents in the community.”
City Councilmember Connie Alsobrook, who chairs the council’s Public Safety Committee, shares Freeman’s excitement about the Mobile Command Vehicle. Alsobrook said she has seen firsthand some of the latest advancements being used across the nation to enhance public safety while attending conferences in the past two years with Police Chief Freeman.
“I want our Police Department to be innovative and well-equipped,” Alsobrook said. “I’m ecstatic that we’re getting this state-of-the-art Mobile Command Vehicle. It will provide our officers—and our community—with the latest technology to better respond to critical incidents.”
