DEKALB COUNTY, GA– The DeKalb County School District (DCSD) announced transportation delays expected at four DeKalb schools on Tuesday, Nov. 28, due to the memorial service for former First Lady Rosalynn Carter. The service will be held at Emory University’s Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church at 1 p.m.
The schools impacted are Druid Hills High, Druid Hills Middle, Fernbank Elementary, and Briar Vista Elementary, all located in the area where road closures will begin at 4 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. on Tuesday to allow for the motorcade of dignitaries and high security detail, the school district stated
Rosalynn Carter, who died on Nov. 19 at age 96, is being memorialized over several days this week in her home state of Georgia, ABC News reported.
Former President Jimmy Carter, 99, plans to attend the memorial service, alongside other family members, according to The Carter Center. The former president has been in hospice since early this year and last appeared in public in September at the Plains, GA Peanut Festival. Determined to attend the memorial service for his beloved wife, he reportedly had a new suit made to wear to the service. Other dignitaries on Tuesday will include President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden; Vice President Kamala Harris and second gentleman Doug Emhoff; former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton; and all of the living former first ladies: Laura Bush, Michelle Obama and Melania Trump. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp and his wife, Marty Kemp, and Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens also will attend. The memorial will be broadcast on ABC News Live at 1 p.m.
The schools expected to be impacted are:
- Druid Hills High School:
Bus routes will be severely impacted.
Car riders will face difficulties due to detours. - Druid Hills Middle School:
Bus routes will be severely impacted.
Several streets commonly used for school access will be closed. - Briar Vista Elementary and Fernbank Elementary Schools: Bus pick-ups may be heavily impacted.
Student drop-offs may experience significant delays.
The school district encourages all families of the affected schools to utilize the free DCSD Transportation app for real- time updates on bus locations. Families can also contact their child’s school directly or the DCSD Transportation Dispatch at 678-676-1305 for further assistance or information.
