DeKalb BOC approves resolution naming section of South River Trail to honor First Lady Michelle Obama

A three- mile stretch of the South River Trail soon will be named the Michelle Obama Walking Trail, an effort led by DeKalb County Commissioner Larry Johnson.

The Board of Commissioners recently passed a resolution to rename the stretch from Constitution Road to the Georgia State University–Perimeter College.

Johnson says he is excited to spotlight the walking trail that connects the new Barack Obama Magnet School of Technology to the walking trail in Gresham Park.

“I am thrilled to acknowledge First Lady Michelle Obama’s work with childhood obesity, healthy eating, and making exercise a part of everyone’s daily life,” said Johnson. “In addition, the renaming continues to recognize DeKalb as a Let’s Move! county, one of the initiatives started by the First Lady.”

Johnson made his remarks during a recent trip to the nearly-finished magnet school.

The renamed walking trail will serve to enhance the already thriving Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Affairs. The recreation department oversees114 parks, consisting of approximately 6,770 acres of parkland and open space, 82 playgrounds, two golf courses, 77 tennis courts, 54 pavilions, 92 ball fields, and 11 recreational facilities.

The resolution to rename the trail was unanimously approved by the Board of Commissioners and now moves to be approved by the Interim Chief Executive Officer.
