UPS to create 1,250 jobs in Atlanta

United Parcel Service Inc. (UPS), a package delivery company, will create 1,250 jobs and invest more than $400 million to establish a regional sorting and distribution hub in Atlanta by the end of 2018.

“I am very pleased to see that UPS, a Fortune 500 company and mainstay in Atlanta for many years, will plant deeper roots in our city with this new hub of operations,” said Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed. “This investment in southwest Atlanta will not only create 1,250 new jobs, but strengthen our position as an international hub for logistics supported by the world’s busiest passenger airport and the many global companies who call Atlanta home.”

UPS will create supervision, administrative and warehouse positions for the new sorting and distribution hub.

With this investment, UPS will use Georgia’s location, transportation infrastructure and logistics sector to reach customers more quickly and more efficiently. UPS is already making a substantial economic impact in the Atlanta area and we look forward to the company’s continued success,” said Governor Deal.

UPS employs more than 14,000 Georgia residents in package delivery operations, ground freight, aircraft operations, data center management and contract logistics. Product and technology development, global transportation network planning and other corporate staffs are based in metro Atlanta.

When combined with the strong transportation connections and talented labor pool that Atlanta provides, UPS is building flexibility to meet the growing needs of our customers and our business in Georgia, and around the world.”

Invest Atlanta President and CEO Eloisa Klementich said she is excited that UPS plans to expand its operations in Atlanta.

“This new facility represents a significant economic investment on the south side of Atlanta that will provide residents access to new jobs across a spectrum of skill levels,” Klementich said. “Invest Atlanta looks forward to working with the Atlanta Workforce Development Agency and UPS to build a pipeline of qualified professionals for these positions.”

John Eaves, chairman of the Fulton County Commission, said he is pleased county leaders had the foresight to work closely with UPS to make project happen.

“The benefits it will bring in terms of jobs and investment are immeasurable. This is a huge shot in the arm and yet another example of the economic engine that Fulton County has become,” Eaves said.

The Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD) Director of Existing Industry and Regional Recruitment Lindsay Martin represented the Global Commerce division throughout this project in partnership with Invest Atlanta and Fulton County.

“It’s an exciting day when UPS, a company with such deep roots in our state, announces they are creating an even bigger footprint in Georgia,” said GDEcD Commissioner Pat Wilson. “This announcement is a testament to our world-class logistics infrastructure and reliable workforce – both which are critically important to meeting the needs of UPS’ customers.
