DEKALB COUNTY, GA.— The DeKalb County Police Department (DKPD) invites the public to a special ceremony remembering the victims of the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
The ceremony will be held on Friday, Sept. 11, at 8:46 a.m. in front of DeKalb County Police Headquarters, 1960 W. Exchange Place, Tucker. All are welcome to attend as DeKalb County Police honor those who lost their lives on that tragic September day 25 years ago.
A Piece of Ground Zero, Here in DeKalb
Outside Police Headquarters in Tucker stands a piece of steel recovered from the World Trade Center. Behind it rises an 11-foot steel phoenix created by sculptor and retired Marine C.J. Miller.The memorial began as an idea from DeKalb firefighter Doug Harms, who spent months raising funds and rallying local businesses, public works crews, and police to build it. About a thousand people gathered for its dedication on the 10th anniversary of the 2011 attacks. This year, the memorial marks 15 years of its own. They Ran Toward Danger
Of the 2,977 people killed on September 11, 412 were first responders, including 343 firefighters and 60 police officers. Friday's ceremony is hosted by the women and men of DeKalb County Police and Fire Rescue, who carry that same oath into our neighborhoods every day. When uniformed officers are called to attention, they stand for those who were lost and for the work that continues.
