‘Race for Peace’ run’ set to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

CONYERS—City Councilwoman Connie Alsobrook and Beyond The Bell are inviting local youths to a 2K “Race for Peace” run commemorating the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. The race will take place on Monday, Jan. 18, noon, at Bill Spivey Community Park, 1221 Irwin Bridge Road, Conyers.

Alsobrook said youths ages 10 to 17 from Rockdale and DeKalb counties are encouraged to participate in the race, which will include stops along the route. Participants will draw a question to answer about Dr. King. In order to continue forward on the race path, the participant must answer the question correctly, she said.

“This gives a perfect opportunity to educate our youth about the life and work conducted by Dr. King,” Alsobrook stated in a news release. “Most of us know and understand that Dr. King believed in and championed peaceful non-violent movements while demanding change.  Change is never easy even though it is inevitable. Considering all the civil unrest we have seen over the past year in our country, we must continue to stress the ideals of Dr. King.  We must emphasize that any movement for change must consist of peaceful, non-violent demonstrations such as those spearheaded and led by Dr. King.”
