Israel has declared war on the Palestinian militant group Hamas aftermilitants carried out a surprise attack by air, land and sea on Gaza on Saturday, Oct. 7. The war between Israel and Hamas has left some 2,000 people dead as the fighting continues.
President Joe Biden held a press conference today and pledged U.S. support to Israel.
“So, in this moment, we must be crystal clear: We stand with Israel. We stand with Israel. And we will make sure Israel has what it needs to take care of its citizens, defend itself, and respond to this attack. There is no justification for terrorism.There is no excuse,” President Biden said during his address.
Hamas called the operation “Al-Aqsa Storm” and said that the assault was a response to Israeli attacks on women, the desecration of the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem and the ongoing siege of Gaza.
The latest violence has caused more than 1,000 deaths in Israel and approximately 900 in Gaza as of Oct. 10, according to authorities on both sides
U.S. Congressman Hank Johnson, who represents Georgia’s Fourth Congressional District, issued the following statement:
“I must express my absolute horror at the scope and scale of the killing and carnage perpetrated upon innocent infants, children, teenagers, the elderly, as well as men and women for simply being citizens of Israel. I condemn the terrorist group Hamas unequivocally for perpetrating this brutal assault on civilians. There is no justification for it, and I stand with righteous people who stand with Israel and her citizens and friends amidst the gloom of this unprecedented attack.”
