DECATUR, GA— DeKalb County Commissioner Larry Johnson will host his Annual Day of Service event on Saturday, Nov. 18, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The Annual Day of Service is a day filled with opportunities for volunteers to give back to their community. Each year, Commissioner Larry Johnson has partnered with different organizations to address the needs of the community.
“We are sharing hope in a big way,” said Johnson. “We look forward to this special time each year because people really show how we can come together and make a difference. This is demonstrated by partners and residents making sacrifices, giving, and serving during this season.”
This year’s Day of Service will begin with a turkey giveaway, in partnership with Women in NAACP of DeKalb Branch (11th year). The free turkeys will be distributed from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.in the parking lot at the Gallery at South DeKalb Mall, 2801 Candler Rd., Decatur.
The sponsors for the giveaway include HugLife Care; 100 Black Men of DeKalb; dReam Center(Lead Pastor William Murphy); Streetz 94.5; National Coalition of Black Women; Frontline Response; Mission Agape; and Pastor Rodney Hurst of Cornerstone Ministries.
Residents will receive on a first-come, first-served basis, a turkey, chicken, and fresh produce. Winter coats will be available for senior citizens.
The 25th Annual Tree of Love kickoff will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. at Walmart, 2427 Gresham Rd. SE, Atlanta. The Tree of Love is a celebration for South DeKalb families, where the community and organizations sponsor needy children to help ensure that each child receives gifts during the holiday season.
The Day of Service will conclude with the Georgia Spartans annual Atlanta Turkey Classic from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Intergenerational Center at Exchange Park, 2771 Columbia Drive, Decatu.,
“We are here to serve, we are here to make a difference, and we want to make sure every family has what they need,” Commissioner Johnson said.
