DeKalb Commissioner Mereda Davis Johnson sponsors holiday for Bruce Street Seniors

DECATUR,GA–On Thursday, Nov.16, DeKalb County District 5 Commissioner Mereda Davis Johnson sponsored a Thanksgiving holiday brunch for seniors at the East DeKalb Senior Center at Bruce Street. Nearly 100 seniors attended the brunch.

Commissioner Mereda Davis Johnson was joined by DeKalb County Commissioner Larry Johnson and Lithonia Council members Vanneriah Wynn,  Diane Howard, and  Darold Honore Jr.  The purpose of this event was to gather and commemorate Thanksgiving with DeKalb seniors and spread love and encouragement during a season that can be challenging for many seniors.

Seniors enjoyed live entertainment from renowned old-school DJ Young Blood and Uncle Joe. The Bruce Street Line dancers also performed during the celebration.

During the brunch, seniors expressed their appreciation and gratitude for Commissioner Davis Johnson and her dedication to ensuring the construction of a new senior center for Bruce Street.

In 2015, upon taking office, Commissioner Davis Johnson committed to building a state-of-the-art senior center for the Bruce Street community and seniors in east DeKalb. Commissioner Davis Johnson secured funding to build a new senior center for the community, which opened in October 2021.

Members of crochet, jewelry and sewing classes at Bruce Street expressed their gratitude by presenting handcrafted blankets, jewelry, scented soap, and a bed caddy to Commissioner Davis Johnson. All the gifts were made by members who have sharpened their crafting skills through classes offered at Bruce Street Senior Center.

“During the holiday season, we have many reasons to be thankful and one of my reasons to be thankful is for my DeKalb Seniors,” Commissioner Davis Johnson said.
