DECATUR, GA- DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston announced on today (Sept. 3)a conviction by jury trial in the case against an Atlanta man accused of shooting and killing a man at the victim’s apartment.
Dequan Trimell King, 30, was found guilty on Aug. 29 on charges of Malice Murder, three counts of Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, Criminal Attempt to Commit Armed Robbery, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon stemming from the shooting death of Brandon McCrary on Sept. 22, 2019.
According to the investigation, officers with the DeKalb County Police Department responded at around 7:30 p.m. to a call about an armed robbery at an apartment complex in the 4000 block of Waldrop Place in unincorporated Decatur.
When police arrived, they spoke to three witnesses. Officers determined that a woman, co-defendant Daizona Allen, 25, rang McCrary’s doorbell. When McCrary answered the door, King was outside with a handgun. Additional suspects came from the back of the building to join King. McCrary struggled with the men, who pushed him into the apartment where he was shot and killed.
The witnesses called 911 as they fled the area.
Immediately following the guilty verdicts, Senior Judge David B. Irwin, who presided over the trial sitting for the DeKalb County Superior Court, sentenced King to Life Without the Possibility of Parole.
On Aug. 2, 2021, a DeKalb County Grand Jury indicted co-defendant Daizona Allen on charges of Malice Murder, two counts of Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault and Criminal Attempt to Commit Armed Robbery. Allen remains in jail pending trial.
The case was prosecuted by the Homicide and Gangs Unit. DeKalb County Police Department Det. Kershaw led the initial investigation.
