WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Hank Johnson (GA-04) announced today that the City of Stone Mountain, GA has been awarded $92,985 from the Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office). The funding is part of the Fiscal Year 2024 Safer Outcomes: Enhancing De-Escalation and Crisis Response Training for Law Enforcement grant program.
The grant will support training initiatives designed to equip law enforcement officers, support personnel, and associated mental health professionals with the skills needed to de-escalate crises safely and effectively. Stone Mountain is among 42 agencies nationwide receiving a portion of the $15.4 million in award dedicated to advancing community safety through innovative training programs.
“Investing in de-escalation and crisis response training strengthens the trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve,” said Congressman Johnson. “I am proud to see Stone Mountain secure this funding to promote safer outcomes for both officers and residents during high-stakes situations.”
The Safer Outcomes program underscores the federal government’s commitment to community policing by enhancing collaboration between law enforcement agencies and mental health professionals. These grants aim to address urgent safety needs while promoting long-term strategies for reducing confrontations and preventing harm.
“We are deeply honored to receive this grant, which reflects our commitment to advancing community policing and enhancing the safety and trust of our community,” said Stone Mountain Police Chief James R. Westerfield Jr. “These funds will enable us to provide vital de-escalation and crisis response training for our officers, equipping them with the tools to better serve and protect our citizens.”
