DEKALB COUNTY, GA—A Lithonia High School teacher has been placed on administrative leave as DeKalb County school officials investigate allegations that she was seen vaping in her classroom filled with students.
Video footage of the incident, captured by students, has been shared on social media, according to parents who spoke with On Common Ground News(ocgnews.com) today. The video shows Mrs. A. King, who teaches business classes and oversees the school’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) program, vaping as she stands before the classroom.
Some parents expressed concerns about the incident but noted that King is popular among students.
“I guess the students thought it was a cool thing for her to do,” said one parent who did not want to be identified. “Apparently, they like her. She’s a relatively young teacher who hasn’t been there that long.”
Lithonia High Principal Mulanta Wilkins notified parents via text messaging/email about the incident on Thursday afternoon, Feb. 27, stating that school officials first learned of the incident two days earlier. Wilkins did not provide a reason for the delay in notifying parents but stated that King had been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by the DeKalb County School District Employee Relations Department.
“The allegations do not involve the direct safety of students and employees,” Wilkins said in the letter, which follows in its entirety below:
It remains unclear whether the vape pen contained nicotine or cannabis oil in it. The DeKalb County School District (DCSD) has a zero-tolerance policy regarding tobacco and drug use on school campuses.
On Common Ground News(ocgnews.com) has reached out to District officials for comment but has not heard back yet.
