WASINGTON, D.C.—Congressman Hank Johnson (GA-04) has joined a growing bloc of lawmakers supporting efforts to impeach President Trump following the U.S. military strikes on Iran, which is at war with Israel. The U.S. attacked three key nuclear facilities in Iran on June 22.
So far, 79 House members dubbed the “Courage Caucus” have voted to move the Trump impeachment proceedings forward.
The move follows the introduction of House Resolution 537 on June 24 by Rep. Al Green (TX-09). The resolution charges President Trump with conducting a unilateral, illegal and unconstitutional military strike against Iran. Green filed the resolution under Rule 1X—a rarely-used House rule that mandates a floor vote on privileged legislation within two legislative days.
Responding swiftly, House leadership scheduled a vote to table the resolution two hours later. Despite the resolution being tabled by 344 yeas, the determined group of 79 representatives—Rep. Johnson—among them –voted No on the motion, effectively supporting the continuation of impeachment proceedings.
The Citizens Impeachment coalition, a nonpartisan group advocating for Trump’s removal from office, praised Rep. Green’s efforts and the support of lawmakers such as Johnson.
“The huge pro-democracy response from the public highlights how necessary it is to take immediate action against this administration,” said Citizens’ Impeachment’s Interim Executive Director Keira Havens.
Rep. Andre’ Carson (IN-07) has requested to co-sponsor the resolution.
On the house floor, Rep. Green said: “I rise today because I believe my country to be at the crossroads of democracy and autocracy. The moment of decision is near. We will have to decide whether we have a country that abides by a constitution that is meaningful or ignores a constitution such that it becomes meaningless.”
The call for impeachment comes just one week after at least 4 million Americans participated in the “No Kings” pro-democracy mass mobilization on June 14.
This vote represents a dramatic increase in congressional support for impeachment. In April, Citizens’ Impeachment mobilized volunteers from all 50 states and 100% of congressional districts to ask their representatives to support impeachment. The effort, known as Operation Anti-King, led to 15 public statements of support, and made national press.
