ROCKDALE COUNTY, GA– The proposed shared Rockdale River Trail will undergo adjustments, the Rockdale County Board of Commissioners(BOC) announced on Friday, Dec. 12. The BOC said after hearing from a majority of residents who opposed the plan, the trail will not go through any residential communities.
“The Rockdale County Board of Commissioners wants the community to know we heard you. In response to public feedback received during the recent comment period, the Board has made the decision to adjust the Rockdale River Trail project to better address community concerns,” the board stated in a news release.
County officials reported that a total of 60 comments were received and carefully reviewed, each of which has been made part of the project’s official record. Of these contributions, 58 comments were shared during public meetings, while two additional comments were submitted via mail and email. The diverse perspectives represented, including 12 comments in support, 41 expressing concerns or opposition, 5 offering conditional feedback, and 2 providing uncommitted observations—have been instrumental in shaping the Board’s responsive approach, the county stated.
Communication with Affected Residents
Residents living along the original trail path will soon receive a letter explaining the project changes. This direct communication will provide detailed information about the adjustments being made in response to community input.
What Happens Next
The Board of Commissioners asks for the public’s patience as the project moves forward with necessary adjustments. A new environmental study must be completed to ensure the revised trail plans meet all environmental standards and address concerns raised by the community. This comprehensive study is essential in making informed decisions that protect natural resources while serving the needs of Rockdale County residents.
Community Participation Is Vital
Once the environmental study is complete, the Rockdale County Transportation Department will host a new Town Hall meeting to present the updated plans and gather additional community input. Community attendance and participation at the upcoming Town Hall is vital to ensuring that community voices continue to shape this project.
Details about the Town Hall meeting date, time, and location will be announced as soon as the environmental study is completed.
“This project belongs to the people of Rockdale County,” said Brian Kelley, Director of Transportation. “The Board of Commissioners has listened to the community’s feedback and is taking meaningful action in response. We’re committed to getting this right, and that means continuing this dialogue with our residents every step of the way.”
