Four Towers Titans players hit double figures on the way to a 63-36 Region 4-A Division 1 over the McNair Mustangs to complete the sweep at Towers on Tuesday night.
Towers (5-11, 2-1) got to work in the opening period with 10 rebounds (five offensive) as they jumped out to a 13-2 lead. Three of Towers’ first six baskets of the game came on put backs, two by Corinthius Collins.
CJ Winfrey’s layup with 4:28 remaining in the opening period made it 13-2. Winfrey finished the quarter with a three-pointer for a 25-8 as the Titans hit on 10 of 16 from the floor. Meanwhile, the Mustangs (3-14, 0-3) found the going tough hitting just two of 10 shots from the floor along with 10 turnovers.
McNair matched Towers point-for-point in the second quarter and outrebounded the Titans 11-6, including five on the offensive end. Rashad Blalock hit for five of the 12 McNair points in the second quarter as the Titans held on to their 17-point lead at 37-20. Winfrey hit for four more points in the second quarter and dished out a pair of assists for the Titans.
Towers opened the second half with a quick 7-0 run including five points by Jalen Kelly along with an assist to Jashawn Thompson to expand the margin to 44-20 with 5:39 remaining in the quarter.
McNair answered with a drive by Jy’Shawn Duffie and a three-pointer by Dennos Johnson, but Towers would outscore the Mustangs 9-2 the rest of the quarter as the lead climbed to 53-27 heading into the fourth quarter.
Jalen Kelly finished the night as the leading scorer with 16 points to lead Towers while Corinthius Collins completed and 11-point, 10-rebound double-double. CJ Winfrey and Messiah Fowler joined their teammates in double figures with 10 points each.
McNair was led a by nine-point effort from Terrance Scott, seven points by Rashad Blalock (6 rebounds) and nine rebounds from Leland Hendon.
