Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a moment to pause and reflect. It is a time to remember what Dr. King stood for and to consider what his message continues to require of us today.
Dr. King reminded us that everybody can be great, because everybody can serve. That truth remains just as powerful now as it was then. His legacy calls us beyond remembrance and into action. This day is not only about honoring history, it is about recommitting ourselves to the work.
Dr. King’s legacy was never meant only to inspire. It was meant to prepare us. Prepare us to lead with courage, to love boldly, and to act with purpose. His teachings remind us that leadership grounded in service can move communities forward, even in the most challenging times. His legacy has prepared us for a time such as this.
As CEO of DeKalb County, I carry that responsibility with humility. Public service is a calling, and leadership must always be rooted in service to people, especially those who have been overlooked, unheard, or underserved. It requires listening deeply, acting intentionally, and leading with empathy and accountability.
In DeKalb County, we are working every day to turn values into action. That means striving for safer communities, expanding opportunity, investing in people, and strengthening trust between government and the communities we serve. Progress is not inevitable. It requires effort, unity, and commitment.
As we honor Dr. King, let us recommit ourselves to living his legacy. Let us serve our neighbors, lift one another, speak truth, seek peace, and work together for the common good. The work of justice, equality, and unity is not finished. It is now in our hands.
