ROCKDALE COUNTY, GA—The Rockdale Board of Elections will hold a Special Meeting on Tuesday, July 21, at 1 p.m. The purpose of the Special Meeting is to call for a floating Local Option Sales Tax (FLOST) Special Election to be held on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026.
The Floating Local Option Sales Tax is a new tool that Georgia counties and municipalities can adopt to lower property taxes for homeowners. FLOST allows communities to collect a 1% sales tax (in addition to existing local option sales taxes) for up to five years, with the option to renew. FLOST proceeds must be used exclusively to reduce property taxes.
With the passage of HB 581 in April 2024, Georgia updated its statewide homestead exemption to limit increases in assessed values. HB 581 also authorized local governments to adopt FLOST, providing counties a new way to support essential services, while easing inflationary property tax increases.
The Rockdale Board of Elections will discuss this issue to determine if the question should be put on the ballot for Rockdale voters to decide whether to adopt FLOST. So far, 34 out of 36 referendums held in 2025 have passed FLOST.
The public is invited to attend the meeting in person at the Board of Elections Office, 1115 West Ave. S.W., Conyers.
The meeting also will be available virtually. To join the Zoom meeting, text 470-902-0976. If you have problems accessing the meeting, click: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/7049887949
