CONYERS, GA— “KUDZU,” a Southern Gothic short film created by Conyers-area filmmakers, will screen on Friday, Nov. 27, at the Conyers-Rockdale Council for the Arts (CRCA)Black Box Theatre, 910 Center Street, in Olde Town Conyers.
Written and directed by Zachary Robert Chancey and featuring a central performance by Shaun Camp, KUDZU is a roughly 12-minute drama that uses the Georgia landscape to explore emotional isolation, depression, faith, and the decision to seek hope. In the story, a man awakens alone in a field of kudzu that seems to grow without end. As the vines overwhelm him, he wrestles with despair and his own will to rise.
“I wrote KUDZU because the language we use for depression is academic, and the experience of it is not. It is botanical,” Chancey says in his director’s statement. “It grows over you slowly and in silence, and from the outside the green even looks beautiful.”
Chancey, an Atlanta-area writer and director and former professional musician, built the film around a single performance, an original score, and the kudzu-covered landscapes of Georgia. He describes the story as an expression of the everyday effort involved in enduring emotional pain.
“This film is for the people still standing in that field, making life happen every day,” Chancey says.
The hometown screening will bring a locally rooted film back to the Rockdale County community. The organizers are exploring a filmmaker discussion and local mental-health resource participation. Exact screening time, registration instructions, and final program details will be announced separately.
Any additional charitable contributions raised in honor of the event will be directed to CRCA through the organization’s approved channels, rather than to the filmmakers.
