STONECREST, GA—Dozens of Arabia Mountain High School students held an anti-ICE demonstration on the school’s football field on Friday, Jan. 30, showing solidarity with nationwide protests following two recent fatal shootings involving federal immigration agents in Minneapolis Minnesota.
Arabia’s students chanted “No more ICE,”as they rallied on Friday around 11:30 a.m. Students had planned a walkout, according to social media posts. School, officials, however, permitted the peaceful demonstration on campus
The high school protest followed growing public outrage in the wake of the fatal shootings of Renee Nicole Good, 37, on Jan. 7 and that of Minneapolis resident Alex Pratt on Jan. 24. Both individuals were killed during enforcement operations by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE). Under President Trump’s administration, agents have carried out mass deportation initiatives, detaining and arresting people they suspect of being in the U.S. illegally.
Across the country, activists, students, and community groups have held rallies and demonstrations calling for reform of immigration enforcement practices, greater transparency in federal operations, and justice for those killed.
Last night(Jan. 29), former CNN anchor Don Lemon was arrested in Las Angeles by federal agents in connection with the Jan. 18 protest at the Cities Church in St. Paul, MN. The internationally-known Lemon was following a protest into the church while reporting. Emmy-winning news producer and Minnesota-based journalist Georgia Fort also was arrested by federal agents in Minnesota for reporting on the same protest.
