Oak Bluffs, MA — Atlanta civil rights attorney, activist, and author Mawuli Mel Davis, will present readings from “We Need You: Encouraging My Sons’ Generation for Black Liberation,” on Martha’s Vineyard on Aug. 11.
The inspiring dramatic reading, produced by Kemi Bennings of Evolve! Artists Live, will be held at the Strand Theatre at 1 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
The dramatic reading will feature music and poetry from the Black Man Lab’s (BML’s) Young Creators’ “We Need You” Project.
“I am excited to share with the Oak Bluffs’ community more than my reflections and stories in the Black Liberation Movement,” said Attorney Davis. “I really want people to hear the voices of the Young Creators from the Black Man Lab and get a better understanding about the safe and sacred spaces the Black Man Lab is creating for our children”.
The award-winning Davis has worked with producer and cultural activist extraordinaire Kemi Bennings on incorporating various artistic expressions. He delights in how the production is inclusive of the entire family unit.
“This will be an experience the whole family will enjoy as we center on the power of young people to change the world,” said Davis.
BML’s Young Creators’ We Need You Project was designed to inspire young creators, innovators, and entrepreneurs to collaborate and create socially conscious content by centering them in the movement work discussed in the work, “We Need You: Encouraging My Sons’ Generation for Black Liberation.”
The result of BML’s project is a 25-track album of thought-provoking hip-hop, neo-soul and poetry available on all music platforms. We Need You – Listen on YouTube, Apple Music – Linktree.
In addition to highlighting the Young Creators’ artistic gifts, Davis’ presentation will include photographs captured by his wife, activist educator Jana Johnson-Davis, during the social unrest of 2020.
