DeKalb County Superior Court Clerk Debra DeBerry is hosting the 7thAnnual Community Appreciation Day, Saturday, Aug. 10, 5 to 9 p.m. at Browns Mill Aquatic Facility, 4949 Browns Mill Road. The family event will include complimentary entry into the facility, food and music.

DeKalb County Public Library will host a groundbreaking ceremony Monday, July 29, 11 a.m.,to kick off renovations to the Stone Mountain Sue-Kellogg Library, 952 Leon Street. The DeKalb History Center’s next “Hops at the History Center” event on Aug. 6 will spotlight Druid Hills, considered one of Atlanta’s first suburbs. Kenley’s Catering will host a hiring event for stadium concession stand workers on Sunday, Aug. 4, 2 p.m., at Panthersville Stadium (Godfrey stadium), 2817 Clifton Springs Road, Decatur. Workers will be hired on the spot for the positions, which will be at Panthersville, Avondale, North DeKalb and Adams stadiums during the football season. The DeKalb County Board of Health will soon offer a free, 12-month diabetes prevention program in three locations around the county. PreventT2 is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Diabetes Prevention Program. The Board of Health previously offered the program only in central DeKalb County. The Prevent T2 program uses trained coaches to teach participants with pre-diabetes how to make lifestyle changes to reduce their risk of Type 2 Diabetes. Aug. 15, 1932-July 22, 2019 Margaret Dean Mitchell Hudson, the mother of Be Someone founder and CEO Orrin Hudson, passed away on July 22. She was 86. The DeKalb County mentor and national chess champion said his mother transitioned peacefully in her sleep. Mrs. Hudson was born in Birmingham, Alabama to the late Phillip Gildersleeve and the late Lillian Perry Mitchell. Mrs. Hudson was united in holy matrimony to the late Jerome Hudson. Roderick Knight, 55, is the third suspect arrested in connection with the death of a 1-year-old Decatur infant who allegedly died after ingesting an overdose of prescription drugs earlier this year. The infant’s parents, Rachelle Rattrey, 24, and Tabares Tony Wadley, 26, who were arrested on July 9, remain in custody at the DeKalb County Jail. The DeKalb Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Unit, working with the U.S. Marshals, located and arrested Knight on July 23 in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana, on warrants charging him with second-degree felony murder and felony second-degree child cruelty.
