DeKalb County School District (DCSD) parents will have another opportunity to earn their General Education Diploma (GED) through a free program. DCSD’s Family IMPACT Hub, headed by the Department of Parent & Family Engagement, is partnering with local higher education institutions to continue offering a free GED program throughout the 2019-2020 school year. The Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) recently began issuing new, more secure driver’s licenses and identification cards at its 67 customer service centers. The cards have a modern design and feel with the most secure credentials the State of Georgia has ever issued. All previously issued Georgia licenses and ID cards will remain valid until expiration. At that time, customers will be issued a newly designed card whether visiting in-person or via the DDS 2 GO mobile app. The new cards are made of premium polycarbonate to reduce document forgery and protect against identity fraud. Representatives from DeKalb County’s Department of Planning will begin presenting ideas and conceptual ideas this evening as a freeform workshop that looks at the future of the Memorial Drive corridor wraps up. The workshop was scheduled today, Aug. 21, from 1 to 8 p.m., at Georgia Piedmont Technical College, 495 North Indian Creek Drive, Clarkston. The Greater Lithonia Chamber of Commerce will host DeKalb County Super District 7 Commissioner Lorraine Cochran-Johnson as guest speaker at its luncheon on Wednesday, Aug. 21, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at This Is It 2853 Panola Road – Stonecrest. The commissioner will share her vision for District 7 and the county. Members attend free with advance registration or pay $10 at the door. Guests pay $20 in advance or $25 at the door.
Rockdale County Sheriff Eric J. Levett will kick off the RCSO annual “Walk It and Talk It With Your Sheriff” on Thursday, Aug. 22, 7 to 8p.m., with the Brentwood Community,1601 Brentwood Crossing, Conyers. Sheriff Levett and his staff will walk and talk with the citizens of the Brentwood Community to discuss and listen to any concerns or issues they may have. The event also allows citizens the opportunity to get to know the law enforcement agents that police their streets day and night. The sheriff will host the event each Thursday with a different community until Nov. 14.
