ATLANTA– Attorney General Chris Carr and 48 other attorneys general today (Jan. 4) announced that Career Education Corp. (CEC), a for-profit education company, has agreed to reform its recruiting and enrollment practices and forgo collecting approximately $493.7 million in debts owed by 179,529 students nationwide. In Georgia, 16,654 students will get relief totaling more than $48 million dollars. “We’re proud of the role that our office’s Consumer Protection Division played in reaching this settlement,” said Carr. “Now, more than 16,000 Georgia students who fell victim to this company’s unfair and deceptive enrollment practices will get the justice they deserve.”…

Nathan Deal and First Lady Sandra Deal was unveiled on Jan. 3 at the Georgia State Capitol, a tribute honoring Deal as Georgia prepares for his successor, Gov.-elect Brian Kemp, to be sworn in on Jan. 14.   Stonecrest Mayor Jason Lary will take on a new leadership role in the New Year, serving as president of the DeKalb Municipal Association. Lary, who serves as mayor of DeKalb County’s largest city with 53,000 residents,  was elected president by members of the 12-city association. DeKalb County District 3 Commissioner Larry Johnson and the South DeKalb Police Precinct are inviting the community to the Officer and Community Appreciation Awards, which will be held this year in memory of DeKalb County Police Officer Edgar Isidro Flores. The awards program, which is open to the public, will be held on Jan. 9, 12 noon to 1:30 p.m., at the South Precinct 2842 H.F. Shepherd Drive, Decatur.
