Congressman Hank Johnson (GA-04) managed two bills that passed the House of Representatives by voice vote on Tuesday. The first bill, H.R. 439, the “National FFA Organization’s Federal Charter Amendment’s Act,” is a bipartisan effort to update and modernize the Federal Charter for the National FFA Organization (formerly known as the Future Farmers of America). The bill updates the FFA’s charter to make it more consistent with the modern organization, and to provide additional flexibility as it looks toward the future. The Atlanta City Council is urging President Trump and members of the U.S. Congress to immediately re-open the federal government. At the Tuesday City Council meeting, Council member Jennifer Ide introduced a resolution calling for the re-opening. The resolution notes that the shutdown affects the overall economic growth of the U.S. and calls for all back pay to be extended to government contractors affected by the shutdown. DeKalb County Department of Watershed Management and construction contractor Ruby-Collins will be performing emergency repairs on a collapsed sewer pipe. Crews will work to replace 300 feet of aging 30-inch-diameter concrete sewer pipe with ductile iron pipe. Flowers Road South, from Woodstock Boulevard to Brandywine Road, will be closed from Tuesday, Jan. 22, beginning at 9:30 a.m., through Wednesday, Feb. 18. The Stone Mountain Pirates finished off a girls/boys home sweep in Region 5-3A basketball action with a 73-62 win in the nightcap against the Redan Raiders on Friday, Jan. 11.
