NEWTON COUNTY, GA— A fatal shooting at Denny Dobbs Park has shaken the community at large—in Newton and Rockdale counties—as law enforcement authorities work the case. Many students from area high schools were at the Newton County park to celebrate Senior Skip Day when the shooting occurred this evening.
Newton County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the shooting just before 5 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office.
An 18-year-old student reportedly was killed during the shooting.
According to a Nextdoor post, students from multiple high schools were attending the “Senior Skip Day” celebration when the shooting erupted and at least one student was killed.
“…An exceptional soccer player lost his life,” the Nextdoor post read in part.
Meanwhile, the Rockdale County School District notified parents tonight that a tragic incident in Newton County might impact Rockdale County students. The text message to Rockdale parents stated:
“Good evening, Rockdale County Public Schools was informed of a possible tragic event in Newton County that may impact Rockdale County students. We are working closely with our law enforcement partners in Newton County and Rockdale County as they investigate this tragic incident. Please be aware you may see increased law enforcement presence at schools tomorrow. Counselors and additional support will be available for students as they arrive on campus. At this time, we are unable to share or confirm any further information as this is an ongoing investigation. Thank you, and good night.”
