ByoPlanet® International expands operations in Athens, creates 250 Jobs

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp today announced that ByoPlanet® International, a leading producer of electrostatic spray technology, is investing nearly $7 million in expanding its Georgia manufacturing operations, delivering 250 jobs to Athens-Clarke County.

“It’s a pleasure to see ByoPlanet International continue to grow their footprint in Athens,” saidKemp. “With a spray system born from innovative studies conducted at the University of Georgia, ByoPlanet International is continuing to play a critical role in keeping schools, airlines, hospitals, and many other indoor spaces safe and sanitized so we can keep our economy open and protect lives and livelihoods as we fight COVID-19.”

ByoPlanet International’s electrostatic spraying technology used in their disinfectant systems is based on research originally conducted at the University of Georgia. As global communities continue to fight COVID-19, demand for ByoPlanet International’s disinfectant systems has grown beyond North America.

During the spring of 2020, when the State of Georgia and the U.S. first began to feel the effects of COVID-19, demand for ByoPlanet’s products grew sharply. As a result, ByoPlanet International contracted with The Classic Center in Athens to use additional space on a temporary basis while the facility was nearly vacant due to pandemic-related closures. The company also hired approximately 30 Classic Center employees who would have been otherwise furloughed due to the lack of arts and entertainment events at the venue at the time.

“2020 has been an exciting and challenging year for ByoPlanet. With all of the changes that have happened in the world since the onset of COVID-19, ByoPlanet has experienced unprecedented growth in our revenue, number of employees, and facility size and capacity,” said Peter Johansson, president and COO for ByoPlanet International. “ByoPlanet has been present in Athens since 2010, and we see the area as the ideal location for our continued growth and development. We are planning for another record year in 2021 with the introduction of two new product lines with a breakthrough in spraying performance, further solidifying our position as the leading provider of electrostatic chemical dispensing technology, and with the expansion of our business beyond North America into international markets. We are thankful for the continued support from the State of Georgia and Athens-Clarke County, and look forward to a long and successful partnership.”

In addition to maintaining their existing 5,500-square-foot facility near Athens-Ben Epps Airport, the new 40,800-square-foot facility is expected to open by the end of 2020. As part of the expansion, ByoPlanet International is planning to bring more than 200 advanced manufacturing, engineering, management, and office staff positions to the Athens area. The company has added more than 100 new positions since March. Individuals interested in career opportunities with ByoPlanet International are encouraged to visit https://byoplanet.com/ for additional information.

“It has been wonderful to have ByoPlanet in Athens as their work has expanded, and we could not be happier to see them establish a permanent footprint in Athens,” said Mayor of Athens-Clarke County Kelly Girtz. “It is exciting to see them utilize cutting-edge technology that creates healthy spaces as they create high wage jobs at this critical time.”

Senior Regional Project Manager Kristen Miller represented the Georgia Department of Economic Development’s (GDEcD) Global Commerce division on this project in partnership with the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government Economic Development Department, and Georgia Power.

“I want to thank ByoPlanet International and our partners in Athens-Clarke County for swift and innovative thinking, quickly ramping up production of disinfectant products critical for the fight against COVID-19, while providing jobs for Georgians who otherwise would have been furloughed,” said GDEcD Commissioner Pat Wilson. “It makes me incredibly proud to see a company born out of the University of Georgia and deeply tied to the Classic City reinvest, grow, and create new jobs while continuing to give back to the community.”
