CONYERS, GA – On Monday, Nov. 1, Rockdale Emergency Relief (RER), 350 Tall Oaks Drive SE, received a donation of food and goods valued at $5,000 from the local congregations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Conyers, GA.
Members of the local congregation, Rick Ingram and Timothy Mitchell, picked up the food from the Bishop’s Storehouse in Tucker and delivered the commodities to Rockdale Emergency Relief that afternoon. The Bishop’s Storehouse in Tucker is one of many regional facilities of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that are available to provide for the temporal needs of Church members and friends when emergencies arise.
The food and commodities in the storehouses are obtained through donations from local members of the Church. Rick and Timothy delivered two and a half pallets of goods consisting of 1800 pounds of non-perishable canned foods, 35 whole turkeys, and additional personal items. Most of the food the Church donates is grown or raised on farms owned by the Church and run mostly through volunteer help.
Other members of the Church have donated time, skills, and materials to help finish Rockdale Emergency Relief’s major reconstruction project this summer that updated and opened the floorplan of the building so that it could better serve the needs of the families who come to the center for counseling and food.
RER has many programs that help Rockdale citizens who need a helping hand. They provide rental assistance and budgeting education, a holiday assistance program, and a local food pantry. They report regularly assisting over 35 families per month with housing needs and between 150 and 200 through the holiday assistance program.
Citizens of Rockdale and neighboring counties can volunteer to help at the center by visiting JustServe.org or MyRER.org.
