STONECREST, GA –The first time the World Series was broadcast on the radio local resident Samuel Wyatt was only a few weeks old. With his birthday falling between celebrated Roots author Alex Haley and civil rights titan the Rev. Joseph E. Lowery, Wyatt recently achieved his own milestone. On September 10, he celebrated his 100th birthday surrounded by his fiancée, family, and friends.

To honor Wyatt’s longevity and contribution to the community, the Mayor and City Council will present a special proclamation during its regular meeting on Monday, Sept 27 6 p.m. designating the day as “Samuel Wyatt Day” in Stonecrest.

Wyatt, affectionately known as “Sam”, was born in Cape Charles, Virginia on the shores of Chesapeake Bay on September 10, 1921, and attended primary school and college in Virginia. The centenarian credits his great faith for his good life. He says, “I found the Lord when I was 12 years old and got baptized.  I thank God every day for how good he has been to me.”

In 1942, Wyatt was drafted out of college to serve his country during WWII in the segregated Army and served in the European Theater of Operations. He spent nearly three years in the Army and had obtained the rank of Tech-Sergeant by the time he was honorably discharged in 1945. From there he pursued professional opportunities in Virginia and New York where he worked for Verizon Wireless before ultimately settling in Stonecrest to be close to family. He enjoys history, current events, watching sports – especially horse racing, golf and football – and doting on his sweetie.

As the City appreciates the contributions and benefits from the knowledge, creativity, and experience all its older residents offer, Mayor and Council invite the community to join them on Monday for the proclamation of “Samuel Wyatt Day.”

Residents can watch the meeting live or at their convenience on the City’s YouTube channel.
