Commissioner Larry Johnson, DeKalb Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs, to host “Our Soundtrack in American Music” stage production Feb. 25

DECATUR, GA— DeKalb County Commissioner Larry Johnson, in partnership with DeKalb Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs and the How Big Is Your Dream Foundation, will host the “Our Soundtrack in American Music” grand finale concert on Sunday, Feb. 25, 6 p.m., at the Porter Sanford, III Performing Arts and Community Center, 3181 Rainbow Drive, Decatur.

The free event features student artists who completed master training sessions this week under the How Big Is Your Dream Foundation program founded by renowned drummer Jorel “JFly” Fly, who is the foundation’s CEO. During this year’s five-day training program, which began on Tuesday, Feb. 20, students worked with  industry professionals, learning popular music progressions and dissecting lyrics that make inspirational and soul genre unique. In observance of Black History Month, this year’s program will include an unveiling of the history of the “Inspirational and Soul” genre of musician and  the impact it has had on American music today as many people weathered stress and anxiety during the pandemic.

Commissioner Johnson has been a long-time supporter of the program, which has provided hundreds of talented students the opportunity to hone their skills in all aspects in live entertainment. The educational training program is one of the highlights that Johnson touts as part of the creative economic development projects under his “Renaissance Initiative.” Johnson, a catalyst and convener who has focused on bringing resources to the South DeKalb area for the past 22 years, has pioneered several projects under his “Renaissance Initiative.”

“This initiative gives our youth an opportunity to learn and explore about African Americans contributions in this music industry,” said Commissioner Larry Johnson. “My renaissance initiative was created with all in mind as we continue, to link, leverage and empower our residents.  The finale concert will be epic, and we welcome all to come out and share in this experience.”

Veteran broadcaster Monica Kaufman Pearson will emcee the “Our Soundtrack in American Music” production on Sunda. The program will culminate with special recognition of industry legends, Blind Boys of Alabama, and live performances by Regina Belle, Frank McComb, Keisha Jackson, Harold Holloway and Company with JFly as the night’s music director.
