ROCKDALE COUNTY, GA—A crowd filled Superior Court Judge Robert Mumford’s courtroom on Friday, Nov. 22, to honor him for serving the community for nearly 50 years.
The 2 p.m. celebration brought together colleagues, staff, elected officials, friends, and family members to honor Judge Mumford’s distinguished career. The program included a presentation of a commissioned portrait of the judge, and an official proclamation and other accolades. Attendees snapped selfies, mingled and enjoyed heavy hors d’oeuvres.
“We appreciate Judge Mumford’s lifelong commitment and unforgettable service, and his retirement marks the end of a remarkable era of service and excellence,” organizers stated in recognition of the celebration.
Mumford expressed enthusiasm for the next chapter of his life. He told On Common Ground News(ocgnews.com) that he is looking forward to traveling with his wife, Bette Jo. Asked what destination was on his bucket list first:
“Japan. I’ve always wanted to go,” Judge Mumford said.
As Judge Mumford steps down, Circuit Juvenile Court Judge Maureen Wood is set to succeed him in January 2025. Wood defeated former Rockdale County State Court Chief Judge Clarence Cuthpert, Jr., in the May 21 nonpartisan primary election.
Judge Mumford’s judicial journey began in 1993 when he was appointed to the Rockdale County Superior Court by then-Governor Zell Miller. Over the years, he became a respected figure in the legal community, serving with distinction after being elected to the bench in 2012 to fill the vacancy left by Judge Sidney Nation, Sr.
An alumnus of the University of Georgia, Mumford earned his bachelor’s degree before completing his J.D. at the university’s School of Law. He began his career in 1979 as an assistant district attorney in the Rockdale County District Attorney’s Office, laying the foundation for a lifetime of public service.
