DEKALB COUNTY, GA— Congressman Hank Johnson and his wife, DeKalb County Commissioner Mereda Davis-Johnson, officially endorsed Larry Johnson in the Democratic primary runoff election for DeKalb County CEO during a press conference held on today, June 2.
The two officials joined a growing coalition of local, state and national Democratic leaders who have publicly declared their support for Larry Johnson, who formerly served as the District 3 Commissioner of DeKalb County and is not related to the Johnsons.
Congressman Johnson, who represents Georgia’s 4th Congressional district, praised Larry Johnson for his experience and dedication to serving the people of DeKalb, stating, “Commissioner Larry Johnson is a proven leader who is dedicated to serving the people of DeKalb County. His experience, integrity, and commitment make him the clear choice for CEO.”
District 5 Commissioner Mereda Davis-Johnson, who serves as the presiding officer of the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners, echoed the congressman’s sentiments, highlighting Larry Johnson’s visionary leadership and proven track record of providing for the people of DeKalb County.
“DeKalb needs a visionary leader who will champion progress and prioritize the needs of our diverse communities. Larry Johnson’s dedication to public service and his track record of delivering results make him the ideal choice,” said Commissioner Davis-Johnson.
In response to these recent endorsements, Larry Johnson expressed his gratitude and reaffirmed his commitment to serving the people of DeKalb.
“I am honored to receive the endorsements of Congressman Johnson and Commissioner Davis-Johnson. Their support underscores the importance of our campaign’s mission to build a DeKalb County that thrives by working with leaders at all levels of government. About Commissioner Larry Johnson
Commissioner Larry Johnson has served as DeKalb District 3 Commissioner since November 2002. In November 2018, he was re-elected for his fifth term. He has been a member of the National Association of Counties (NaCo) since 2005. In July 2021, Johnson was elected President of NaCo, and in 2017 he was appointed as the chair of NaCo’s Large Urban County Caucus. Commissioner Johnson earned his Bachelor of Science in Community Health from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and obtained a Master’s in Public Health from the University of Northern Colorado. In 2005, he was appointed Chair of the Health Disparities Subcommittee of the Health Steering Committee for NaCo. Commissioner Johnson is married and has one daughter.
