DeKalb, Gwinnett, Rockdale, Newton to collectively receive over $400M under plan

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Hank Johnson (GA-04) today (March 10) thanked  Senators Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock for joining him in supporting the final passage of The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, which will bring needed relief to families impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.    released the following statement after voting in favor of final passage of The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

The $1.9 trillion package will provide $4 billion to Georgia’s public schools and $8 billion to state and local government in Georgia alone, double what Georgia received in the CARES Act — to save jobs, boost economic growth, and maintain vital public services. Of that, the counties that make up Georgia’s Fourth District – DeKalb, Gwinnett, Rockdale and Newton – will receive more than $358 million and the cities within GA-04 an additional $60 million in funding to help struggling families and businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic. It now goes to President Biden’s desk for his signature:

Johnson released the following statement:

“The American Rescue Plan Act will crush the virus, return children safely to the classroom, get vaccines in people’s arms, put dollars into families’ pockets and put people back to work,” said Rep. Johnson, who voted to pass the relief package twice. “The plan will deliver immediate relief to working families bearing the brunt of the crisis and support communities struggling with the economic fallout. Not only does it help make people whole by providing $1,400 checks to individuals, but it also extends unemployment benefits, helps people struggling to pay bills cover housing costs, provides food security, and continues our help to our small businesses, which are the backbone of our economy. I want to thank our new Senators – Sen. Ossoff and Sen. Warnock – for making the difference and passing this much-needed relief for Georgia and the nation.”

ECONOMIC RELIEF FOR FAMILIES:

  • $1,400 stimulus checks for individuals making up to $75,000 ($150,000 per household), with checks phasing out at $80,000 per individual ($160,000 per household). An average working-class family of four will receive up to $8,200 in economic relief;

For the first time, adult dependents will also receive full $1,400 dependent checks;

  • The families of 1,042,000 Georgia children will now be eligible for additional relief of up to $3,000 per child ages 6 to 17 (and $3,600 for young children under the age of 6) through the expanded Child Tax Credit, lifting 171,000 children in Georgia out of poverty;

  • 572,000 childless workers in Georgia, including many frontline workers, will now be eligible for additional relief through the strengthened Earned Income Tax Credit — of which the maximum amount for workers without children is nearly tripled in this legislation;
  • $562 million in rental assistance for families;

  • $1.5 billion for childcare assistance;
  • A $27 monthly increase in nutrition assistance for approximately 1,875,000 Georgians;

SUPPORT FOR STATE & LOCAL GOVERNMENTS

$8.1 billion to the state of Georgia and direct funding for Georgia’s smaller cities, towns, and counties to help support first responders, vital public services, hospitals, and small businesses;

Local governments would receive their allocations in two tranches—the first half 60 days after enactment and the other half one year later.
