CONYERS, GA—Mayor-elect Connie Alsobrook held her first “My Mayor Listens” community forum on Thursday, Nov. 20, at Star Vision International Event Center in Olde Town, drawing a diverse audience of black, brown, and white participants to the intimate gathering.
Alsobrook spent the evening fielding questions and giving attendees the opportunity to speak openly about the issues that mattered most to them. Together, they covered a broad range of topics—from zoning and economic development, to voter apathy, rapid tree loss due to aggressive tree cutting and the need for stronger preservation polices with unchecked new development.
Residents also sought clarity on the powers of the mayor and council versus those of the city manager. The Mayor and council mainly set policy, pass ordinances, approve budgets and establish the city’s long-term direction. The city manager, on the other hand, is a hired administrator who oversees the day-to-day operations, manages staff and implements the polices adopted by the elected officials. The issue is one that the city council and new mayor will examine at its retreat in January 2026 when they consider modifying the city’s charter.
Despite the variety of concerns, one theme dominated the conversation: community engagement. Residents wanted to know how to stay informed and how to become more involved in the city’s decision-making process.
Many participants expressed interest in learning more about upcoming city council meetings, local events, and zoning issues. They said their top hope for the new mayor is that she will prioritize improving communication and championing community involvement.
Alsobrook said she plans to hold monthly community meetings as a way to keep residents connected and ensure their voices are heard. A meeting will be held in December with a date and time to be determined and announced.
“I really want our residents to know that they must get involved, in order to know what’s going on and to have input,” Alsobrook said.
She also shared her intention to move the public comments section of the city council meetings to the beginning of the agenda—before votes take place—so residents can weigh in while it still matters.
“I just think it makes sense to hear from the citizens before we, as a council, vote on matters,” Alsobrook said.
