ATHENS, GA—Myra and Kenley Waller made a special delivery on Saturday, April 20: Myra’s uncle, Marcus E. Goolsby, turned 100 on that day. The Wallers, who own Kenley’s Catering in Atlanta (aka Everybody Loves Kenley), prepared the food for the momentous celebration. The event was held at the Living Waters event facility in Athens, GA.
Myra Waller noted that her Uncle Marcus was the life of his own party.
“He still has an excellent memory. He was cracking jokes like always,” said Waller, whose father was one of Marcus Goolsby’s younger siblings.

The guest of honor was delighted to see the crowd of family and friends who turned out to help him celebrate his special day, said his daughter, Linda Jones, who planned the event with help from her husband, Ronald Jones, and their daughter, Rhondolyn Smith.
“I didn’t try to surprise him. I told him ahead of time ,and of course, he dressed up for the celebration,” Jones said of her dapper dad.
Jones said her dad celebrated his birthday all weekend, starting with a pre-birthday party on Friday, April 19, at Quiet Oaks nursing home, where he lives; on his actual birthday, Saturday, April 20, and he even had a post celebration on Sunday, April 21, with other well-wishers.
“He really enjoyed the himself. He was very happy and excited. He received many presents–a cap, socks, gift certificates and other items,” Jones said.
The honorable Steve C. Jones, who is a federal judge in Atlanta, was among the guests who attended the celebration and spent time with the centenarian reminiscing about their farming days. Judge Jones is Linda Jones’ brother-in-law.
“They had great conversation about riding their tractors,” Linda Jones said, referring to the judge. “My dad has a sharp memory, good vision(never worn glasses) and he was a mathematician.”
Marcus Goolsby was one of six children born in 1924 to Florida and Willie T. Goolsby in Carlton GA, located just east of of Athens. Myra Waller’s dad and a sister were twins in the sibling group. Now, Marcus Goolsby is the lone survivor, family members said.
Marcus Goolsby married and had three children of which Linda remains his only living child. He has one grandchild, Rhondolyn Smith; and one great-grandchild, Jamison Smith.
.Linda Jones said her dad’s employment history not only included farming, but also work at a granite quarry and manufacturing work at Westinghouse in Athens, where he retired.
“He still enjoys visiting the family home. We pick him up from the nursing home and take him for visits and sometimes just out for a drive to see places he is familiar with,” said Linda Jones. She and her husband, Ronald, own Jones Funeral Chapel in Crawford , GA.
