DEKALB COUNTY, GA— DeKalb County District 5 Commissioner Mereda Davis Johnson announced on Wednesday, Oct. 14, that she is allocating $5,000 to each of the five high school bands located within District 5 to support student musicians and strengthen band programs across the district.
High school bands play an important role in the lives of students and their communities, Davis Johnson said. From band programs that instill discipline and build character to performances at football games, school events, and countywide celebrations, these students devote countless hours to honing their talents and proudly representing DeKalb County through competitions, parades, and community engagements, “ she said.
“Supporting our young people continues to be one of my top priorities,” said Commissioner Mereda Davis Johnson. “Our high school bands bring pride, energy, and unity to our communities. This $5,000 contribution to each of the bands in the 5th District is an investment in our future and will help provide them with the resources they need to continue learning, performing, and soaring toward success.”
The Martin Luther King Jr. High School Band recently kicked off Commissioner Davis Johnson’s District 5 Gen Z Day, a back-to-school initiative that provided school supplies and gave Gen Z youth an opportunity to learn about the history of Historic Lyons Farm. The band helped set the tone for a day focused on engaging and supporting DeKalb County youth. This contribution continues Commissioner Davis Johnson’s ongoing efforts to invest in the next generation and provide young people with opportunities and resources to succeed.
"The funding will support the essential needs of each band program — including instruments, uniforms, equipment, travel, and other critical expenses — ensuring that all students have equitable opportunities to participate, perform, and compete,” Davis Johnson said.
Commissioner Davis Johnson remains committed to investing in District 5 youth and creating opportunities that support their education, talents, and future success.
