DeKalb County: Convicted felon sentenced to 20 years for shooting beggar who asked for $1

DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston announced a conviction by jury trial in the case against a convicted felon who shot a man who asked him for money at a gas station. 

Homer Wright, 46, was found guilty of three counts of Aggravated Assault and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony in connection with the June 23, 2025 shooting of Jquante Lenon, who is now 46.

DeKalb County Superior Court Judge Gregory A. Adams, who presided over the trial, sentenced Wright to 20 years to serve in custody without the possibility of parole during a hearing on Tuesday, Aug. 11.

Wright was sentenced pursuant to O.C.G.A. § 17-10-7 (c) (Georgia’s Recidivist Statute). Since Wright was previously convicted of two armed robberies and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, he is ineligible for parole.

According to the investigation, officers with the DeKalb County Police Department responded around 10:46 p.m. on June 23, 2025, to a person shot at a home on Fields Drive in Lithonia. Officers found Lenon with a gunshot wound to his left foot.

Lenon told officers that he had approached a man’s truck to ask him for a dollar at a gas station located in the 6000 block of Hillandale Drive. The man, later identified as Defendant Wright, refused and Lenon walked away. 

Wright pulled his truck over to where Lenon was sitting on a curb, got out of the vehicle and brandished a firearm toward him. Wright then approached Lenon and pistol-whipped him in the head. Lenon stood up and hit Wright in the face. Wright shot Lenon in the foot and drove away from the scene in his truck. The assault and shooting were captured on surveillance video.

Lenon ran to his nearby home and asked a neighbor to call 911.

Officers secured arrest warrants for Wright and took him into custody without incident on June 30, 2025. 

The case, assigned to the Trial Division, was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Charlie Boyter, with assistance from Senior Assistant District Attorney Jordan Riser, District Attorney Investigator Keith Carter and Victim Advocate Marva Coward. DKPD Detective Clayton led the initial investigation.
