According to witnesses, the shooting occurred during a candlelight vigil for a teen who had been shot and killed a few days prior during an attempted home invasion on Gresham Road in South DeKalb. Shortly after balloons were released, a man walked up to Hagerty in the middle of the crowd and fired directly at him.
Surveillance video from the apartment complex shows the crowd begin to disperse when shots are fired. The shooter is seen with his arm extended firing shots at Hagerty after he has fallen to the ground. The shooter walked away from the victim and began pacing up and down the sidewalk. As members of the crowd got into vehicles, he was waved into a car that then left the scene.
After still photos of the suspect were released to the media, tips came in and officers were able to identify Grier as the shooter. He was taken into custody at a residence in unincorporated Decatur on Jan. 27, 2023 without incident. He has been held without bond in the DeKalb County Jail since his arrest.
