The Stone Mountain Pirates could not hold off the South Atlanta Hornets in the second half as they fell 38-13 at Cobb Stadium on Thursday night(Sept. 18).
South Atlanta took an 8-7 lead into the half as Eric Paredes hit a 37-yard field goal as the halftime horn sounded. The Hornets had 38-yard pass from Jaylan Alexander to Caleb Yarrell to set up the go-ahead points.
The Hornets came out in the second half, scoring 23 unanswered points to take command of the game. They opened the half driving 73 yards for a touchdown with Jaylan Alexander scoring on a 5-yard touchdown run. Paredes tacked on the point after to make it 15-7 with 7:54 to play in the third period.
Alexander scored on another five-yard run following a bad snap on a punt by the Pirates that was downed at the five. Paredes point after made it 22-7 with 4:50 remaining in the third quarter. The lead expanded to 24-7 as another bad punt snap was downed for a safety.
The Hornets went up 31-7 on a 10-yard touchdown run by Daquan Alexander and another Paredes extra point.
Stone Mountain came right back down the field with Surprisse connecting with a wide-open Jerod Wilson for a 35-yard scoring toss with 6:17 to play. A two-point try was no good
The Hornets finished the scoring with a 23-yard touchdown run by Brandon Smith with 2:53 to play. Paredes was good on the extra point.
A high snap caused Stone Mountain punter Dennis Bomba to step out of the back of the end zone with 9:39 to play in the first quarter to put South Atlanta up 2-0.
The Pirates forced South Atlanta to punt and on the second play from scrimmage quarterback Braydon Surprisse escaped a tackle at the line of scrimmage and was off to the races on a 73-yard touchdown run. Bomba hit the extra point to make it 7-2 with 6:42 left in the first quarter.
South Atlanta drove to the Stone Mountain four-yard line and with back-to-back tackles for a loss by Pirate defenders Jerod Wilson and Justin Warren and an incomplete pass forced South Atlanta to try a 27-yard field goal. Paredes hit the three-pointer to pull within 5-7 with 9:03 to play in the half.
Stone Mountain (0-6) drove down the field late in the first half on a pair of 27 pass plays as Surprisse hit Kaliel Thomas and Carlos Hammonds. Facing fourth and four at the Hornets (2-4) four-yard line, Stone Mountain faked a field goal, but the pass could not be hauled in, and the Pirates turned the ball over on downs.
Surprisse finished the night hitting on 15 of 20 passes for 170 yards and a touchdown while adding 69 yards rushing and another touchdown for the Pirates.
