DEKALB COUNTY, GA—Federal investigators are working to determine what caused a small plane belonging to All2Fly Flight School, based at DeKalb-Peachtree Airport (PDK), to crash over the weekend at the corner of Clairmont Road and 9th Street in Brookhaven. The national Transportation Safety Board joined the FAA and PDK officials in examining the wreckage.
PDK Airport said preliminary radar data shows the Piper PA-28( tail number N1080H) departed PDK at 10:51 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8, for a trip to Rome, Georgia, before returning to perform multiple “touch-and-go” training landings.
At 12:45 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9, the plane reportedly struck several trees, coming to rest in the yard of a residence. No homes were damaged. However, downed power lines caused outages in the area. Brookhaven Police, DeKalb Fire Rescue and Georgia Power crews quickly secured the area, authorities said.
Three people were on board. No fatalities were reported. The most severe injuries included a broken wrist and a broken ankle. All three occupants were transported Grady Hospital, authorities said
PDK Airport Director Hunter Hines thanked the agencies for their swift response to the crash.
“Our focus now is on supporting the ongoing investigation, and we will be working closely with the NTSB and FAA to determine the cause of the accident,” Hines said.
DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson also expressed her gratitude for the agencies that acted quickly and offered the County’s support to ensure the investigation moves forward.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the individuals injured in this tragic accident and with their families. I am grateful for the swift actions of our first responders and the patience of residents impacted by the crash. We will continue to offer support where it is needed and ensure that the investigation proceeds thoroughly and respectfully,” Cochran-Johnson said.
PDK Airport said it would continue to provide updates as new information becomes available.
