Gwinnett County Public Schools hold ceremonies for two new inclusive playgrounds for students

GWINETT COUNTY, GA–Two new inclusive playgrounds at Baggett Elementary School and Ferguson Elementary School are creating more opportunities for all students to play.

At Baggett Elementary, the playground idea grew out of a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) Project-Based Learning experience with some of its 4th-grade students. The students stepped into the role of project managers and used simple machines to design the playground they envisioned. The school also received donations from Regions Bank and two local families, the Hansens and the Dorfmans, for the playground. As a result, the money the students originally raised will now go toward creating a new playground for the school’s pre-kindergarten students.

“They researched inclusive playgrounds, explored why they matter, and even designed their own playground ideas focused on accessibility and making sure all students can play together,” said Baggett Elementary Principal Kevin Payne. “Their work helped shine a light on the need for a more inclusive space at our school.”

During the dedication ceremony, students shared the areas and skills they believe the new playground will help develop. They highlighted skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, inclusion, respect for others, perseverance, and responsibility.

Each playground features a ramp, a gliding see-saw, slides, and a playground communication board that allows students to interact both verbally and non-verbally while using the equipment.

The new playground at Ferguson Elementary School was built using funds donated by Gas South and the Stratix Corporation. During a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially unveil the playground, students stepped outside, holding signs, and shared a message over the intercom thanking both companies and GCPS leadership for making the project possible.

“Our students have watched this playground come to life right before their eyes,” said Ferguson Elementary School Principal Altonise Royal. “Today represents so much more than the unveiling of a new space; it is a celebration of partnership, generosity, and the commitment to our students and the Gwinnett County community. Because of your [donors] support and belief in our community, you have helped create the place where imagination will grow, friendships will flourish, and joy will be experienced every day we have school.”
