CONYERS, GA– Foster families gathered this past Saturday, Oct. 4, at Elks Aidmore in Conyers for al training session led by national-recognized foster care expert, John DeGarmo, PhD.
The event brought local foster parents together for an in-depth discussion on the emotional challenges of caregiving, including secondary traumatic stress, compassion fatigue, and ways to strengthen support systems for foster families.
“The impact of a child’s trauma can take a significant emotional toll on caregivers,” said Dr. DeGarmo, founder and director of the Foster Care Institute. “Our goal is to make sure that foster families here in Conyers have the support and resources they need to thrive.”
State Rep. Rhonda Taylor attended the event to show her support for foster children and families. Representing Conyers, parts of the eastern Atlanta metro area, Taylor spoke with attendees about the need to expand resources for foster parents and the need for children in care to have the stability and support necessary to thrive.
“Children in foster care depend on strong foundations of safety and security to grow and heal,” said Taylor. “Equipping foster parents with the right training and access to resources allows them to provide the steady care children need to flourish.”
Taylor continued, “Every child’s journey is different, and meeting them where they are is key to their development. With consistent support, foster children can build the stability that helps them thrive.”
DeGarmo also addressed the challenges of parenting troubled teens, sharing practical strategies for managing difficult behaviors and offering tools to help families strengthen bonds and create a healing home environment.
“The stress of parenting teenagers can feel overwhelming, and challenging behaviors are often a natural response to past trauma,” said DeGarmo. “With the right guidance, foster parents can build meaningful connections with their children and help them reach their full potential.”
Since 2014, Amerigroup Georgia has coordinated healthcare services for children in foster care through the Georgia Families 360° program, working with about 32,000 young people across the state. The program provides specialized support for foster youth, children receiving adoption assistance, and some involved in the juvenile justice system.
Foster parents seeking additional resources, updates on healthcare changes, or information on joining local support networks are encouraged to contact their care coordinators or local advocacy organizations.
